Cartridge choices for AR15-based SBR

Post by mbogo »

What do you folks like for an AR15-based SBR?

I've already got 10.5" uppers in 5.56 NATO and 300 AAC Blackout.

Is this just a fun gun/ noise maker, or does it have a real world purpose?

I can speak from experience with regards to a 10 inch barreled AR in 5.56. They have the same MV as a .22MAG, and they don’t go through windshields worth a damn.
The moments I was censored was the moment that I won. That's twice, now. Thanks jwbaker, et al, for my victories.

It will be a plaything unless I can find a practical use for it.

For extra smallness, yet still retaining ballistics, 45ACP.

Loaded with 450 SMC ammo, a 45ACP carbine is worthy of deer hunting, with a 185 grain bullet going 1500-1650 fps. Way better than 556 with a sub 10" barrel, and way harder hitting than 9mm. Also consider 38 super and 10mm.

For punching paper, 9mm is tough to beat.

My favorites:

8-10" 300blk
5.5" 9mm
4.5" .22lr
7-10" .223

the top three also being excellent suppressor hosts

In addition to what is mentioned I'll add 12.5" 6.5 Grendel makes for great fun ringing steel at distances not expected from a SBR.

I had a 10.5" 458 Socom that was a blast, but went up to a 16.5" barrel so no NFA hastles when traveling. Seriously hard hitter on tough game if shots are not too far.
It's not a silencer, it's a can of whoopass!

Based on the recommendations received here and elsewhrere, I've ordered a 12" Grendel upper from Palmetto State Armory. See https://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-12- ... 49195.html
for specs.
