Destroyer Carbine

Post by jreinke »

Yahoo! I finally got a Destroyer Carbine. I've been wanting one for years. I really lucked out with this one as the date code on the barrel is for 1970, which indicates that it was made in one of the last production batches.

I'm still debating as to whether I should leave it as a 9mm Largo or rebarrel it to 9mm Luger. Input would be appreciated.

If anyone's interested there is another Destroyer Carbine on Gunbroker. The auction ends next Sunday, June 16th.

Click on the top Gunbroker link, it's got a bunch of pictures. I decided to leave it 9mm Largo and ordered (backordered) brass from Starline, they're the only ones making 9mm Largo brass.

When you start to reload it, be careful I had to Frankenstein a set of dies that would work with my Star Super

From what I've seen from various web sites, 9mm Largo brass can be resized with 38 super dies, so that's what I bought. Lots cheaper than buying 9mm Largo dies form RCBS for $150+. Got the brass and some berry's 124 gr. bullets, it's on my "to do" list when I get around to it.

On a related note:

Rock Island Armory... "RIA"... has a round out called the 22 TCM. They sell a 1911 for it that can be converted to fire 9mm since the bolt-face and magazines are the same dimensions as 9mm. The end result is that the 1911 can be swapped to shoot 9mm with ONLY a barrel switch and a spring switch.

I mention this because they ALSO sell a 22 TCM bolt-action rifle that uses either short 5-round magazines, or the standard 17-round magazines that their 1911 uses. It occurs to me that with only a barrel swap on their rifle... it would be a 9mm bolt-action. I don't know if they offer this. I don't know if they could be asked to offer this. I don't know if it could be custom done by them or if any modest barrel maker could be asked to create a 9mm barrel to use with that gun.

There is some potential there, but I'm not sure how to extract it.
