WSJ 30March2020: 'Public Blueprints for Digital Guns

Post by Historian »

Wall Street Journal (WSJ) today. page A3, Brett Forrest has
interesting article on company Defcad,
which has 3,680 files available for 3D printing.

Holy Bat-Guano, Batman!!

In the great Clint Eastwood action movie "In The Line of Fire*"
the antagonist 'Mitch Leary', former CIA
operative whom Secret Service Agent
Frank Horrigan is hunting, is shown meticulously hand filing
a plastic 2-shot pistol.

We cognoscenti at that time of course chuckled that in real life
the plastic piece would blow up in the miscreant's hand.
It was easy to infer the limitations of this ever really coming
to fruition.

Humble Pie is not only embarrassing to eat, but
those damned feathers stick in your teeth. :) :) :)

From this WSJ article curiosity lead to finding
an article on 3D printing of a monocore can
at:

Further exploration shows the ingenuity of combining
metal barrels and parts with 3D printed parts ( even working
plastic springs  ).

I hope that the provenly enlightened and astute
heads at ATF see the distinct advantages of immediately
taking cans off of the 1934 Act's restriction
as they wisely did in the past for detachable shoulder stocks
from Historical Weapons. Openly shooting a C96 and
FN 1936 HiPower at range is a joy.

Classifying cans as serialized accessories which
get fast realtime background checks at legitimate FFL dealers
will first help American Industries to recover
from this Chi-Com Virus induced economic blip
as law abiding folks will flock to acquiring many cans;
second, reducing the rate of folks making untraceable 3D
cans; and finally saving Americans' hearing.

Win-Win.

President Trump has shown the efficacy and benefits of
taking bold steps in shredding bureaucratic red-tape:
"For every new regulation 2 must be eliminated".

Eliminate the non-productive restrictions on suppressors now, please.

Just a perspective from a 'geriatric' historical perspective.

*' In The Line of Fire' is one of the most exciting action
movies that pays tribute to the superlative work of the
dedicated folks of the US Secret Service.

I was humorously upbraided by a buddy for suggesting that ATF
could modify and update the legal acquisition of suppressors
within the strictures of the 1934 Act.

In the vein of a fast turn around crisis 'Puzzle Palace White Paper'
here is an example that ATF could immediately institute:

1.0 Prior example is seen in license renewals at the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

1.1 You go in with old license or application for your first license.
You get appropriately tested after a check has been made to determine if you have outstanding
fines, unpaid tickets, or outstanding warrants.

1.2 If you pass you pay the fee and a temporary Xerox license is issued which is in
effect until your official lamented licensed is mailed within 30 days.

2.0 ATF Updated Streamlining

2.1 You go to FFL dealer and chose a suppressor.
Like purchasing a firearm an instant background
check is made as when purchasing a firearm.
If all checks out well you pay the dealer $200 stamp
tax, which is adhering to the Act, and a Xerox copy
of your 'license' with the Tax Stamp number is given you
along with your serialized can. In 30 days or more
the official stamp is sent to you.

3.0 Benefits versus detriments:

3.1 The Act dictates the application for
a stamp and payment thereof and not the
administrative procedures to implement it.
The new ATF streamlining process presented
above adheres scrupulously to the intent of the Act.

3.2 The payment of $200 for the Stamp is satisfied.

3.3 Overwhelming of the ATF officers is immediately
relieved as the same FBI Data Base used for firearms
purchase filters out a miscreant.

3.4 For every 100,000 new suppressors purchased
the US Treasury gets $20,000,000.00.

3.5 ATF agents salaries for administration is also
saved and the agents can be assigned to actual
law enforcement.

3.6 The making of 3D printing of unreliable suppressors
is greatly reduced thus accruing law enforcement benefits.

4.0 Conclusion: Introducing the new ATF streamlining
of benign suppressor purchase is a win-win for the citizen,
Law enforcement, and hearing health.

Perhaps some diligent ATF agents that monitor gun sites
will read the above and pass it on to their superiors.

Feel free to submit it as your own for promotion to
GS-14.

There is no pride in authorship.

Got mine eons ago. :)

Best!

Update:

Today 20 May it was announced that President Trump has signed another
executive order eliminating more 'red tape' regulations.

Open query to our ATF brethren in this vein is institute the streamlining for paying
the $200.00 suppressor tax stamp by putting background checks
for the acquisition of suppressor in same category as firearms purchase,
i.e., at the dealer with instant FBI data base check.

A year's delay in issuing the stamp takes longer than completing a complete background
check to get SCI TK 'tickets'.

The previous post lists the details of the all around benefits.
It certainly would help in our economic recovery.

Hope some diligent ATF officer will read this and submit the suggestion
to hierarchy.

Hope springs eternal.
