Respirator for Suppressed Shooting
Hello,
Anyone use a respirator when shooting suppressed? After about a 2 hour session at an indoor shooting range with a suppressed AR 22LR and a integrally suppressed 10/22, I had a severe headache and developed a nagging cough. Now I'm thinking that I should've been using a respirator. Comments...suggestions?
Regards,
Richard

Find a better range with proper ventilation.
Re: Respirator for Suppressed Shooting
That's a long time to be shooting indoors in my opinion. Its one thing to be in a class or something where there are alot of breaks. One of those basic dust masks would help.seattlite wrote:Hello,

We have world class ventilation at the new indoor range in my town and I still drive another 45 minutes to an outdoor range.
Re: Respirator for Suppressed Shooting
Yup...noted. But even shooting outdoors, I'm thinking that a respirator could help with the particulate blowback...specially with semi-auto rifles.Jmark wrote:Find a better range with proper ventilation.
Re: Respirator for Suppressed Shooting
Sound like you need a Liberty suppressor.
What can do you have? My AR has little blowback in 22lr My AR's 556/9mm is another story!
Go to better range, air should be sucking away from you.

I shot the SS Sparrow(AR 15-22LR) and a TM Operative(10/22).Emilio wrote:Sound like you need a Liberty suppressor.

Just grab one of these, wonder if they would have an issue Only issue is it's hard to shoulder a rifle and use the sights, the mask gets in the way.

Here's a picture of me leaving the local range in my protective mask. I think you'll agree that it is both stylish and effective.

Cool how the dorky one allows you to smoke while filtering your surrounding air:)
Re: Respirator for Suppressed Shooting
My brothers father in law had a small range built in his basement in the early 90's by a pro company. In 2004 during a checkup one of the grand kids had a very high lead level in his system. They tested the other in the family and they all had high levels. The folks who installed put a vent in the range but was far smaller then is recommended now.

Re: Respirator for Suppressed Shooting
All,
I've been doing some research and found some interesting links regarding firearms particulate matter and found that Carbon and Lead Dust particulates are 0.2-10 micron(Carbon) and 2 micron(Lead Dust). I also found a mask that will filter down to the sub-micron particulates and looks pretty comfortable and looks decent enough to wear. 3M also has a bunch of disposal masks that I think will also work. Here are the links if anyone is interested:

http://www.respro.com/products/urban-co ... chno_mask/
http://www.respro.com/products/sports-l ... tsta_mask/
I also found this old thread which has a bunch more links from calguns: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/show ... p?t=170187
Firearms residue sensitivity to me has never been an issue until shooting suppressed. Even with proper ventilation or even shooting outside, I think I'll wear a mask...just while I'm actually shooting, then I'll remove when I step off the line.

Richard

Dude. If you had that much exposure, you might get your blood checked for lead levels.

Good advice! But I don't think I've got that much exposure but rather, think I'm more sensitive to the blowback particles than others, so I'll be more cautious next time.markm wrote:Dude. If you had that much exposure, you might get your blood checked for lead levels.

You might be surprised. That's a spooky amount of lead vapor to be huffing.seattlite wrote: Good advice! But I don't think I've got that much exposure but rather, think I'm more sensitive to the blowback particles than others, so I'll be more cautious next time.
Re: Respirator for Suppressed Shooting
I use one of these. In addition to filtering air it provides several tactical advantages such as the advanced Imperial ZQ-88 sensor array. It also includes a much needed 1-6x optical magnification.
The helmet isn't all that expensive but the "die for the Emperor, NOW!" thing can get a bit inconvenient at times.

Yeah...exactly what I was thinking...thus the hunt for something to protect the respiratory system while shooting suppressed...specially with auto-loading rifles.markm wrote:You might be surprised. The only problem with this helmet is the obvious obscured vision. Ever notice how they never hit anyone in a firefight?ick wrote:

Re: Respirator for Suppressed Shooting
Now that you mention it that always did bother me about the series. The stormtroopers were so useless... I mean not even as effective as one of our current soldiers with primitive projectile weapons whilst assaulting... seeming to use little or no tactics other than "charge into fire".
Furthermore, surely the unit would have at least some kind of communication advantage that would allow the commander to know two of his troopers guarding the Milennium Falcon were compromised... and laying dead in the hold...

Re: Respirator for Suppressed Shooting
Maybe it wasn't the storm troopers being ineffective as much as it was their choice of weapons. Maybe the weapon design was based loosely on the Mini14. We all know how inaccurate they were from watching The A-Team. They never could hit anything..lolick wrote:Now that you mention it that always did bother me about the series.
