Shotgun for my wife

Post by noname »

We are both getting "long-in-the-tooth" so to speak. She wants a shotgun for at home defense. She is enthralled with the clack-clack of a pump. Last weekend we took one of my 12 ga out. She is a bit on the small side 5'3" 122 lbs and her arms and body are not really built for a 12 ga pump though she could shoot it but with a sore shoulder after 2 rounds of #4 buck. Her thinking is the clack-clack of a pump would get most home invaders heading for the door but if not she could shoot-em. Regardless the gun needs to be one she is not afraid to practice with.

She has a concealed carry permit and keeps a Kahr PM 9 in her purse.

I found a Mossberg .410 pump but only has a 2 round mag + one in the chamber. Probably enough, though we routinely don't keep a round in the chamber of any home defense weapons. It seemed to be a size for youth or smaller people.

At one time, I had a 28 ga side by side and like a fool sold it. I have not found a 28 ga pump yet.

Any advice??

Mossberg's web site shows several .410 pump-action shotguns with 5+1 capacity.

All the Youth Model shotguns and you can have the stock modified and fitted with a recoil reducing pad by a gunsmith for proper stock fit, length of pull for your wife.

Also low brass (Pump shotguns only) have less felt recoil, I noticed many times, if you fear recoil, you do not shoulder the stock firmly enough or step into it, recoil is less punishing if you face it rather than shyly hold it, you need a proper stance, shotgun firmly on shoulder, foot on that side a step back and a firm grip.

Go with a 12 bore shotgun and reduced loads for practice, I have noticed no. 9 shot really spoils a Bad Guys Day, especially a few that invaded my home with the express purpose of murdering me.

Look at the Mossberg Youth Model 590 12 bore.

They do have a 28 guage model, but I prefer low powered 12 guage cartridges.
