Security Cameras

What is the best online site to get security cameras? I want a site that has a good selection with decent prices. There has been a few more break ins in my neighborhood than usual.

Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, Best Buy, Fry's all sell usable turnkey solutions.

You can spend as much as you want on Polaroid, AXIS or other systems.

Cameras don't actually prevent breakins, only documents them.

true but they may deter it or make identifying the perp easier. It may not do any of those things but it is just one more bow to add to my quiver of home security. I'm just fine with a shotty and glass shot and a pit ball but I have a 14 mo.

If you want to deter just pick up a fake camera with a conspicuously flashing LED for $10-$20. It will do absolutely everything to deter crime that a real camera does but cheaper, easier to install, less maintenance and you don't have to worry about losing important footage.

You gots to keep those domes clean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yzEDUPwLRs

If you place your cameras with the intent to deter you will also inform would be "perps" they are being recorded so they know to take steps to defeat the cameras like long hair over their faces or masks or some more direct attack.

Still looking for these guys I think.

I'm not saying cameras might not be useful if something does happen at your house, just be aware the footage from the camera can just as easily be used against you.

Also think about replacing the glass with dimes in your reloads. And pit balls aren't very effective against adults, I don't care how many you have.

We had a local guy break into a church and steal their collection money. It was dark, the camera had an infrared emitter on it and the poor guy had no clue how good of images were being recorded. not sure if they ever caught him but they certainly had grade A video evidence.

All so often though, the video is poor quality and it is difficult to make out facial details. But knowledge of a camera is usually deterrent enough.

Whether or not cameras will deter thieves, they are a good idea, IMHO.
We have 8 cameras, some not so obvious.
We have every entry point alarmed and backed up with motion sensors, some photo beam, too. I made bars for my garage windows. Its on the ground floor and they look like ornate grills, not ghetto.
There is a sensor for driveway entry, as well as a motion which turns on all exterior lighting. This helps extend camera range and resolution, at night, as well as deter.
Then the 4 motion sensors around the property.
The alarm and camera "brains" are in a room which has a reinforced door. They have a dedicated battery backup, very extended supply, and a cellular communicator. The signal is sent to mine and my wife's cell phones. If we don't respond to it within 120 seconds, via text, it is sent directly to 911. Good thing we live in a small town, I got to know the operator pretty good when I was installing :)

The camera system can be viewed on any TV in the house by simply switching inputs.

Overkill, I think so, but we live outside of town, on a quiet road and, oh yeah, my wife wanted it...... :)

I got most of it from HomeSecurityStore.com and the rest from wholesale vendors.
I installed everything myself, didn't take an afternoon, but thats where the savings come from.

As for you ball pit, is it something like this

I wish. Now that was funny.

Thanks for the site, suits my needs to a t. Im all for self installation, I was an electrician for 6 years so making holes in stuff and crawling through my attic is mere childs play. I don't think your setup is overkill as long as you can sleep at night. I just recently had a run in with an ex-con I supervised. The conversation was polite but my instincts were screaming "Get the hell outta here", he said he makes good money building bikes. Last time I checked, he was making good money in the joint selling drugs. Don't think that has changed much.

Most of the low priced cams you find in US retail outlets (Swann, Lorex, etc) are HikVision cameras that have been re-branded and had a profit margin added.

Best prices are on ali-express but warranty is difficult since you are buying direct from china. The prices are sometimes low enough that you can still come out ahead if you get a defective one and have to toss it. Nelly's Security is good for a US distributor. Lots of other sellers on amazon and ebay you just have to figure out if you are getting Chinese firmware or English firmware.

I have HikVision DS-2CD2032 cams all around my house and shop and they have been rock solid reliable. Using Blue Iris for the DVR.

I think they have a pretty strong deterrent effect on "casual" thieves... I have seen people knock on my door, decide that I'm not home then start wandering around. They usually notice a cam, freeze for a few seconds, then immediately leave.

At work we buy from Supercircuits.com. I have several of their turnkey systems and they are easy to install and program. Price is pretty good. Quality is real clear. Our stuff is out in a very rough environment and holds up well.

I decided this year to upgrade my FFL security system with video, primarily because the county has decided to build a section 8 building on my street and they're expanding another section 8 complex a few miles away.
As a LEO, over the years I've seen so many BAD security video that I had an idea what I wanted for my situation
I went with a layered approach, with those big camera housings around the exterior that scream "camera", a second layer of cameras inside that they'll probably see and maybe try to avoid getting their faces recorded, and a third layer that's not so noticeable but should capture their faces if they're trying to avoid the obvious cameras.
Video, like pictures, is worth a 1000 words. Juries today like video and images, and the better images you can get the better, for any eventual capture and prosecution
I went with my alarm provider and he actually threw in the bigger external cameras for free because they were cast-offs from a commercial security upgrade he'd just completed. Their images are still good enough, and like I said, they aren't the primary video source, just the early warning system to potential thieves that they're being watched
Whatever you do, be sure your system is viewable remotely from your smart phone, and make sure that your video is being stored off site so they don't just take your DVR with them when they leave and you lose your video evidence along with it

This thread got me thinking about upgrading my old system as well.

Years ago I got one of the turnkey solutions like I mentioned previously and it's served its purpose. it does well enough as a deterrent and a witness but years after purchase resolution is low and playback is slow compared to newer systems.

I've ordered a couple of these to test them out based on the recommendation of a friend who uses them at his shop.
https://reolink.com/shop/rlc410s-4mp-fi ... -ip-camera
https://www.amazon.com/Reolink-4-Megapi ... B016UCNPEE
  • * POE 802.3af Power consumption ~5.5W (DC 12V optional
    * 2560x1440 resolution
    * built-in storage (event based recording)
    * built-in video playback
    * built-in motion detection
    * smartphone access
    * built-in email alerts
    * also compatible with Blue Iris, Synology, Qnap and others
Not bad for $85

They also have a WiFi version if POE/cables isn't an option
https://reolink.com/shop/rlc410ws-4mp-f ... -ip-camera
https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Reolink ... B019MMABCI

They also have dome, zoom and PTZ models but not all have the built-in SD card storage. Pros and cons of no built-in storage is the camera is cheaper than the same built-in storage model but some kind of NVR is required.

Go with the largest video resolution and pixels as you can.

I started out with a 4 camera system and eventually bought 2 more cameras at a time until I have the full 8 cameras that my 1 gb dvr will record.

I don't have it set to record on motion. I have it set to record continuously 24 hours a day. You'd be surprised how often that has came in handy. Most recently when the neighbor was moving and clipped the corner of my fence and then just left. That short bit of video was all it took to get uhual insurance to pay for the damage, but without it was just my word against his. He even tried to tell the deputy that was doing the accident report that he wasn't aware he had even hit the fence, but the guy had no idea that I had the cameras or the deputy had already seen the footage before he came back for the 2nd load and the deputy just told him flat out he had already seen the video of him hitting it and that there was no way that he didn't notice the whole large uhual rocking back and forth as it was hung up on the corner pole and he was lying. That incident alone, the damages to my fence costed more than the whole security system.

The dvr I'm using is a night owl brand and works well and I can even hook it to the internet and check it while on vacation, etc though I never leave it hooked to the net any other time to prevent anyone from hacking into it and watching to see what I'm doing or home, etc. Only when I'm going to be gone for a while.

My cameras are Samsung 1080 Model# SDC-9443BC. They are usually pretty expensive buying at home depot and the likes, but I was picking them up on ebay for about $45 each. They have a metal housing, have been hanging in the weather for almost 2 years now with no water leakage or problems with the lens or wiring or electronics. I highly recommend them. Samsung makes good stuff.

I'm sorry that I resurrect the old topic, but it's just that I myself once encountered this issue, and spent a lot of time to find really useful information
If you want very easy, no special installation, look at Foscam, Schwann, Arlo ( expensive in that it runs solely on batteries and they can burn up quickly) or my favorite, Zmodo best peephole camera Look for wireless or POE ( power over ethernet) one cord runs everything. Simply plugs in the camera, the other end plugs into the recorder. Just like a landline phone, snap one end in, snap the other end in. All 3 make affordable simple install DIY home security camera systems. You may also want to look into indoor cameras. some of these run on batteries alone, can sync to your Iphone. You may also want to look at a security system that offers protection and surveillance.Good Luck

Thankfully this is now mature technology, and has progressed far beyond the now obsolete VCR set to continuous recording, Now set to motion detection and event recording, and 0 light cameras on Infrared light and 📷 cameras with wireless and even solar rechargeable systems with power backup too.

With a motion detection setup and a terabyte solid state drive, and cloud backup and alerts to your phones, I emphasize a motion detection setup as I remember having to review much dead recording to get to the useful footage or recording, the new stuff has adequate high resolution, 0 light and Infrared, plus the perimeter needs sensors or even trip wires placed in areas an invader will cross when breaching fence lines to gain access to the property, but strategically placed so Animals will not trigger them, only humans.

Once a human gains access, it is a bit late, I prefer an advance notification of an intruder crossing a fence or opening a gate.
