My mother "bless her heart" carved her SSN in the stock
My mother "bless her heart" carved her SSN in the stock
of my rifles with a vibrating type engraver. All her stuff, including her TV got carved. Something she picked up from some journal as a means of identifying stuff if they got stolen. She has been dead 32 years now and don't think she is worried about her info getting hacked . I have left the two rifles involved as kind of a memento but don't want my info tracked by way of hers. Any advice? It would be easy to sand and refinish the wood involved.

A 'gunsmith-kink' given to my by a WW2 vet/gunsmith in the 1960s
that I have personally used over the
intervening 'eons' is using Steel Wool, 0000 Super Fine
with what is now called "HERTERS - FRENCH RED STAIN".
The 4xZero-steel wool with the Herter's ( this past year
my 1960s can is now finally empty ... lasted a long time)
to safely perform a minimally invasive leveling.
Then I finish with Mother's California Paste wax on a dampened
4 x Zero pad to buff up and get a mirror surface.
4xZero waxing has preserved the stocks of WW2 rifles, e.g.,
LongBranch Arsenal .303 Enfield Sniper Rifle, M1 Carbine, H&R M65 .22
training rifle, etc.
Looking forward to other more knowledgeable folks here
posting their techniques.
Best.
