Momentous in Texas--Constitutional Carry & Suppressors

Congrats to Texas on Guv Abbott signing the Bill on Wednesday to make Texas the 21st Constitutional Carry state. Only a few years ago, many Texans were disappointed when they passed permitted open carry, because the legislature wouldn't go all the way to ConCarry back then. However, once permitted open carry became common, it was a small step from there to Constitutional Carry. Nothing wrong with gaining gun rights step by step, rather than all in one big swoop.

Also, Guv Abbott signed into law on Tuesday making Texas-made suppressors exempt from NFA (and the $200 tax). It's an interesting experiment where the Texas legislature made some 'improvements' to what previously MO (or was it KS?) and MT passed and struggled with against the Federal Courts. It remains to be seen whether the Texas legislature law differences will hold up against the Feds.

The second bill, which Abbott signed on Tuesday, according to the state Legislature's webpage, exempts Texas-made suppressors, also known as silencers, from the National Firearms Act, a body of laws that in part require gun owners to register NFA items, including suppressors and short-barreled rifles, with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives before paying a $200 tax.

The legislation cleared the House in early May by a 95-51 vote and passed through the Senate by a 22-9 vote.

Both laws take effect on Sept. 1

Tennessee also pass a FFA which exempts us from suppressors having to go into the NFA. Within a month or so of passing, as the holder of an FFL, I received a very poorly photocopied letter from the ATF advising that the law held no merit. So much for state's rights.
This is certainly one to get to a friendly SCOTUS; however, the costs in getting one there and risks of their flights of whimsy are not worth it to the average person.
