Searching for 7.62x39 subsonic loading data

Post by Tobi »

Hi folks
I am searching for 7.62x39 subsonic loading data with 200 gr bullet.
Lapua produces such ammo, but only for LE.
Hope someone could help me.
Best regards

All these loads utilize a magnum primer and a moly coated 200 gr bullet.

7.7gr Red Dot
8.0gr HP38

I have a bunch of test loads built on N310 and AA5 to test but no time to go to the range. :?

I am shooting these in a bolt action rifle. No guesses as to how they might work in a semi.

Hodgdon H322 1.05g (16.2grains).
Lapua B416, 13g (200grains) or D166 13g (200grains).
Keeps the gun self reloading- atleast with a BR reflex supressor R12AK.

PKM and Suputin - what kind of accuracy are you getting and what twist are your barrels :?:

And thanks for the info.

7.62x39 subson

Post by illuzion30 »

Heh, I just registered to see if I could find out more on 7.62x39 subson myself. After finding http://members.shaw.ca/cronhelm/762Page.html, I e-mailed Peter Cronhelm and he gave me some reloading data a few weeks ago that I've *not tested*:

Military surplus 145gr FMJ-BT seated backlwards no crimp
6.0gr Red dot Velocity @1000fps 50% load density
Win cases, WLR primer flash hole drilled 9/64"

Hornady 168gr AMAX backwards no crimp
6.0gr red dot Velocity @950fps 50% load density
Win Cases, WLR primer flash hole drilled to 9/64"
NOTE: reportedly works good in 1:10" twist and reported good for hunting (not deer, varmits)

180gr Sierra
17.0gr Win748 V@1035fps
WLR primer Win cases

200gr Speer FB No crimp
8.0gr red dot V@1030fps 70% load density
WLR, WIN Cases flash hole drilled 9/64" pentrated 6 2X4's

180gr SPBT
10.7grs IMR4227 V@1000fps
CCI200 primer WIn cases
clean and accurate

200gr SPBT
11.0gr IMR4227 V@1016fps
CCI200 WIN case
accurate and heavy, good penetration

180gr SPBT
7.0gr IMR SR7625 V@1032fps
CCI200 WIN case
Very clean burning, excellent accuracy, best so far

200gr SPBT
7.8gr IMR SR7625 V@980fps
CCI200 WIN case
Very clean burning, very good accuracy

Only problem is that these rounds will not cycle an AK... I was hoping to get some data for even lower weight projos so I could use M2 AP pulls (163 grains, I believe). I've considered buying a pressure gauge and seeing if I could come up with a 163-grain subson 7.62x39 load, but it will likely be a while before that project comes to fruition.

Also, it might be of some interest to you that EBR has subson 7.62x39 loads that you can get from SRT or "The Gun Runner".

Has anyone tried a 7.62x39 load using red dot and 180gr RN bullets? If so what is the load you are using? Thanks

The following are built with a Hornady 180gr RN moly coated bullet. Primer flash-holes are reamed out to 9/64" and a magnum primer used. Velocities are from an 18" barrel.

N310 6.0gr (~40% density) = 990 fps
Red Dot 6.0gr (~60% density) = 932 fps
N320 5.9gr (~45% density) = 990 fps

Thanks for the starter load. I will up that red dot load some and work down to around 950-1000FPS out of my rifle. The first load I was looking to do was red dot and the 180gr hornady round nose myself with a coating of moly so it's great you listed that load!

Re: Searching for 7.62x39 subsonic loading data

Post by Tobi »

I found some new info.
"180 grains Sierra bullets in .311 diameter and 11.5grains Accurate 5744-powder. This combination is subsonic and cycle properly in my bulgarian AKM-47."
and

"12 grains of 5744 drives the Fatter 30 boolit (200 gr.) out my IO Inc. AK at 1150 FPS and cycles the action. Gonna try 11.5 and 11 grains tomorrow to get the velocity down and see if they still cycle. I'm a little amazed that this wide-meplat boolit feeds from the mag like poop through a goose! I can't give group size results, as the front sight needs to be adjusted badly. Groups are nearly a foot to the right (from the factory)."

any suggestions?

First post and I’m reviving a dead thread...great start, right?

This thread comes up when searching google for subsonic 7.62x39 loads. I wanted to update it for anyone else searching for subsonic loads for an AR-15 in 7.62x39.

I used Speer 180 grain soft points with 11.5 grains of Accurate 5744.

They are subsonic and cycled the AR action.
The POI is 12 to 14 inches lower at 100 yards than standard wolf ammo.
I was shooting a 16” barrel with a 9mm suppressor (a strong 9mm suppressor...).
I have an adjustable gas block on the AR and it cycled with it half open, 10 clicks out of 20.

12 grains is supersonic. I did not chrono nor try to group them. I was more interested in cycling and ejection and such.
