Looking for anyone who may have experience witha good pair of walkie talkies. Looking for something that uses rechargeable batteries as well as the option for standard batteries. Needs to be weather proof and durable. Using for hunting/camping as well as any SHTF situations. Anyone with any experience they can share would be greatly appreciated.

I use the FRF(?) radios available at most sporting goods stores. They work really good when you and another are scoping out a large gun show.

Until you get to where you are using a repeater it is fairly short range. Best all around in my oppinion would be ham radios. You can use any chanel like CB, FRF, Marine etc. Has scan options, can listen to police and fire if not encripted by them, can even unlock so you could transmit if critical. Use common sense and stay off where you don't belong. I have two ICOM ic-t90a, might be better around now. I picked two frequencies and each transmits on one but reciever on the other so hard for someone to hear both sides of the conversation.

For things like this the FRS radios are great, same with just using for fun. They are not so great for emergencies as they have very limited number of channels (frequency), and would be quickly overloaded by everyone who has one, also not even close to secure.

Not really SHTF awesomeness, but the ones we use, at the cabin, are the Garmin Rino.
You have an LCD screen with programmable maps, way-points, static locations and you can see everyone elses radio GPS position (if they're programmed).
They can be pricey, but give you a lot of info.
I say not great for SHTF, because I'm not too sure how reliable GPS would be, in a really bad scenario.

A dual band can still work on CB, FRF, Marine, etc and will scan for police, fire etc. Can be complex, but a lot of flexibility.

Some of the new ones can be set up for unit to unit encrypted texting as well as voice. Anybody listening in would just get a chirp or some static as the text went out.

Walkie Talkies get lost or broken all the time. At least with me and my friends they do. I recommend the cheep ones, and getting a lot of them. No they are not encrypted or anything fancy but they work. They won't have rechargeable batteries, but you can use standard rechargeable batteries in them. I would rather have a dozen cheap ones than a single pair of high tech ones.

How far do you want to talk? Do you want to be able to use your radios from within a vehicle or from a boat ? If you want to talk line-of-sight ONLY while foot-mobile, and if you're in the US, then go with one or more of the previous recommendations that I clarify here:

- FRS (Family Radio Service, no license required, least expensive, least power output, can't upgrade antennas, channels can get congested in populous areas because everyone and their mother's cousin's dog has these radios; no repeaters exist),

- GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service, which requires an inexpensive license from the FCC; most of these radios also include FRS channels; price ranges from slightly more expensive than FRS to hundreds of dollars each, such as the aforementioned Garmin Rhino with GPS; some models accept better aftermarket antennas; channels can get congested in populous areas for reason stated above; you can get better than line-of-sight comm if you buy harder to find duplex GMRS radios and use repeaters),

- or a couple of 2-meter and/or 440-MHz ham HTs (amateur radio Handheld Transceivers, which requires passing a written test to get a 10-year license from the FCC; prices range from cheap Chinese made radios up to several hundred dollars each for Japanese/US-made radios; can change power output on many models; all of these can upgrade to better antennas; some quality models will meet or exceed military standards of water resistance; you can get far better than line-of-sight comm if you use repeaters or more advanced technologies; AFAIK all 2m or 440 ham HTs can transmit duplex for use on repeaters).

In addition to the above-mentioned recommendations from other members, for line of sight foot-mobile comm in the US, I also recommend:

- MURS (Multi-Use Radio Service; no license required, not as congested as FRS or GMRS, harder to find radios though, repeaters don't exist for this radio service).


If you want to talk further than line of sight and/or if you want good comm inside a car, plane, or boat; your options and/or accessories will be different from these above. (Don't rely on simplex FRS or MURS, if you want to comm beyond line of sight. You'll want to use repeaters and/or HF radios.) Let me know if either of these apply to you. You stated that you want walkie-talkies for any SHTF scenarios. Imagine having a medical emergency at a campsite hundreds of miles from the nearest cel tower. FRS radios ain't gonna cut it, if you want to call the WEMTs (Wilderness EMTs) or Park Rangers 200 miles away for help. Radios are like firearms: You get what you pay for. When the SHTF, do you want to risk your life, or the lives of your loved ones, by using cheap Chinese made radios? Please let me know if you have more questions. I hope this helps.
