It will be built on a Remington 24. I will cut the barrel to around 4.5" and pin and weld an aluminum monocoque to avoid an SBR stamp. My tooling is limited. (harbor freight lathe, drill press, 3d printer, hand tools)
I have two build options, simply put a 1" ID tube around the 1" OD monocore OR put a 1.5" tube around the 1" monocore and have it be offset to the bore. The 1.5" option would look much closer to the original gun. It would be held in place with spacers at the breech and bore. The 1.5" option would have a good amount of dead space surrounding the 1" monocore. I know that making a 1.5" monocore would be better, but I do not have the tooling to make a nonconcentric monocore.
My questions:
- are there any issues you can see from the 1.5" tube setup?
- how much quieter would the 1.5" tube be over the 1"
- should the dead space in the 1.5" be packed with anything?
- any other issues/improvements?

An excellent 'tube' can be obtained by removing the ends of
the SINAR camera rail.

I don't think your idea of putting an undersized monocore (See above drawings) off center in an oversized tube is going to work at all. There is no compression between cells. It would be better to make an oversized monocore, mount it in the lathe off center, and grind or cut it it to be eccentric.

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, I don’t have the ability to run the bore eccentrically in my lathe.
I did not realize that compression would be so important in a can with such high volume. (The tube will be 16-17” the baffles are 12”)

I already have the monocore made.
I can think of 2 other options to add compression.
I can put a 1”ID sleeve around the monocore and just have the 1.5” tube be decorative only. (To match the gun I’m trying to recreate)
Or
I can 3D print a sleeve the full ID of the 1.5” of the outer tube. This sleeve would have “baffle extensions” that would line up with the aluminum baffles and allow for compression. This would printed in CF Nylon.
Do you think I should go with either of these options or my original idea which would have more volume but no compression.
I know this is not ideal but It’s the best course of action I can think of with my current tools.

Hey, I am only an electronics engineer! I am sure when the mechanical engineers see this post, they will have better opinions and better ideas than me. It seems a shame to lose all that volume. Perhaps you could cover the monocore with a tube to fit, and put a few tiny ports in the case to allow it to vent into the larger tube? It would probably be best to pack the outer tube with copper screen, steel wool, etc, and vent the inner can experimentally for best results. ( Naturally, following all required laws, blah, blah, blah)

Eccentrics need not be complicated only the end caps need to to be off set and timed the core remains in line with the barrel . The core you have chosen needs some improvements as the gas disruption will be low. A good choice would be the Wolf suppressor H&K used in the MP5SD. You may need a welder for the transition between the square tubing but it would be worth it. A nice project looking forward to see the outcome.

Thanks for the tips. I am intrigued by the MP5SD design. My welding skills are pretty basic. I am more concerned with bending the sheet metal precisely. I feel like this would be even more difficult with the bore being eccentric. Any recommendations for an easily manufacturable monocore that would have better disruption? Almost all the designs I have seen would require a mill.

The Wolf baffle is not eccentric and can be reproduced using a dremel tool. This baffle is easy to make and in retrospect can be made without a welder. Don't overthink the eccentric tube its easy and if you need advice you are on the right page.

Here is a third world guy turning an eccentric bar with a lathe. Note that he is just using a three-jaw, self-centering chuck with shims to shift the axis, although you can do it a little more accurately with a four jaw chuck, or just between centers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7hvirwGrQ0
If I were you, I would practice cutting eccentric bars out of something easy, like plastic, or even wood, before committing to an expensive piece of sold bar. This is a good way to get the hang of it.
Admittedly, you would have to start your monocore all over again, but it would be the Christian thing to do! If you could draw out the basic profile, you could get an online machine shop to make your "blank". ( A solid bar...maybe with a 1/4 inch hole through the center) but don't even think about trying to get them to mill the thing out for you, or you will end up in a federal, pounding up the azz prison, and your kittens will be as good as dead.

I think that I could figure out the eccentric bore drilling. My main issue is making baffles in the monocore what would be more efficient than my current design

Yes, an optimal design requires a lot of special knowledge and hard work...and can never really be optimal. Good luck, can't wait to see what you come up with!
