Recoil Booster: Stand-Alone Nielsen Device

Yes, it can be legal to make a silencer. For everything Form-1, from silencer designs that are easily made, to filing forms with the BATF, to 3D modeling. Remember, you must have an approved BATF Form-1 to make a silencer. All NFA laws apply.

Recoil Booster: Stand-Alone Nielsen Device

Post by PaulNoiseLess »

Hi,

This is the Project related to Recoil Boosters I’m working on: Stand-Alone Nielsen Devices (SAND).

The idea is to have a Suppressor that contains only the core (baffles) and attach de SAND (when needed) to perform a double function: Recoil Booster and Expansion Chamber. If the DND is not to be used, you can use a Stand-Alone Expansion Chamber (SAEC).

That allows me to share 1 can (with a SAND and a SAEC) between two or more different Guns with the same (or similar) caliber. For example an AR-15 .223 and a .223 Rifle. Or a .9mm Pistol with a .308 Rifle (not the same but not far). And so on …

I need you guys to help me on this. I don’t even have in clear if it’s a good idea or just a waste of time. Don’t care if it’s already invented and/or patented. I’m not from USA.

About dimension, springs, … I’m still on the “software testing” phase so be patient. In any case if someone is interested in trying (committed to build and try, not just for having the Plans), please, let me know so I forward the Blue Prints.

So that’s it. Thanks again to LavaRed for posting the pics. It’s been a big step in my research.

Best,

Paul

Remind me to this 2 in 1.

2in1 ND (lock and roll booster).
Pull and twist to a lock position for single shot purpose (manual cycling), or for a fixed barrel pistol.

Here's mine for the 9, with 3 index fix pos.

Lock by pulling the suppressor forward against spring tension until the prongs clear their slots, and then twisting the suppressor to align the prongs sit on a curb, not in slots. This prevents the gun to cycle for a next round.

great idea! I had the same thought a while back, but I am not sure how that would work for those of us in the US. I suppose we would have to register it as a separate suppressor.

Hi,

Here we go again. Version 2.1, with pic & video (9 mm. Action simulation with shot. 1/10 of second more or less).

Specs:
3 x 1.25 inches
100 grams
1/2 - 28 TPI threads (both sides)
Spring: From 5 to 30 pounds
Locking Ring: When present (threaded to piston and walling the tube) locks the spring action
Pressure Ring: Each step (round) equals 5 pounds (4 steps)

I'm now working on version 3.0 and testing (simulations) with the can hooked up (5 inches, monocore). Also garbing all the pressure curves during action to fine tune the ring.

Here you have a pic and a video. (Ctrl + Click on the video link to open a new window)

Best,

Paul

Comments ?, yes, please ! ....

Paul,

Flawless and inspiring presentation. Admiration for your inventiveness and clarity in limning your ideas.
You are indeed inspired under the Southern Cross.

Hi,

Yep, Southern Cross is the inspiration for all the Full Moon stalkers, like me. That’s the reason I always have my “Magellan” GPS with me.

Ok, here you have version 2.99 (still some pending work on the pressure ring but not a big deal).

It’s in YouTube so Ctrl+Click to open a new window.

Best,

Paul

PS: Magellan = Magallanes. The Spanish guy who found that a given group of stars always point to the south, regardless of your position (in the southern hemisphere). He was the first guy to cross from the Atlantic ocean to the Pacific ocean. The pass is known as Magellan’s strip and is between Antarctica and Chile/Argentina.

Hi gent´s.
I need a internal nielsen device (home made), and I don´t know anything about spring tension.
PLEASE give me any usual specifications of this spring. (dimension, tension, etc...)
Thank you.
PS: My suppressor has OD about 1,18 inch , OL about 7,8 inch and weight about 150 grams (0,33 lbs)

To: PaulNoiseLess - Are done your testing?

Can't you buy a stand alone booster male to female .5x28 threads from AWC for there Abraxas 9mm suppressor?
I called a year ago and it was 250$ a high price but already finished.

all has 4 active coils and 2 more end coils.
internal dia. is 17mm (0,67 inch), spring wire dia. is: 1. - 1,6 mm (0,063 inch)
2. - 2 mm (0,079 inch)
3. - 2,5 mm (0,098 inch)
Material is stainless steel

A spring of between 20 and 25lbs strength should do it. This would be a spring 2 inches long, 1" OD, made from 0.1" thick Stainless Steel wire, with 7 coils, the last 2 being closed coils. It is best if you order it made to these specs.
I trust this has been helpful,
Thank you for listening,

G'Day Fella's,

On the back of the success of my centerfire rifle suppressor design, I have had some requests for the same but for 9mm and .40 S&W semi-auto handguns.
Lava Red, would the spring that you suggest, 2" Long x 1" OD x 0.100" Wire Diameter (for a Nielsen Device/Booster), be OK for most or just some semi-auto pistol cartridges?

Thank you for any information you are able to help my out with on this project!

Best Regards

It should work best on most pistols with a recoil spring of bewteen 15 and 25 lbs of tension, and a booster weighing up to 4 oz. I have personally tested it on an M1911A1, using the original GI recoil spring and modern 23 lbs replacements. It works flawlessly, and without any damage to the gun. I don't see why it would not work in 9mm and .40S&W, provided the recoil spring strength and booster weight are in the same ballpark :) .

Hope this has been helpful,

G'Day Lava Red,

Thank you for your help on this, much appreciated.

I currently have a mates Glock 17 A (the "A" stands for Australia, which means it has a longer than normal barrel (now 121mm), to comply with the laws) in my safe.
I need to get the thumbs up from Dave and I will then cut a 14mm x 1mm pitch thread on the extended portion of this barrel, then make up a Can and Booster to suit.

See, Bad Laws are not always BAD bad, in this case it makes it easy to mount a Can!
Thank you JWH! You slimy Political Animal now a Has Been!

I hope to get back to you all shortly, with a report.

Best Regards
Johno

Hi John,

Sorry i'm late. Yes, it works and it's been tested on 9 45 40 and several others i do not remember now.

I did follow LavaRed clues on sizing the ND and also had a good track on the Piston from him.

So, yes: 2 inches, < 4oz and 25-30 pounds spring.

For sealing the device, I have tested both o-rings and ports less pistons.

Best,

Paul

Hi gent´s.
I have a question about space between piston and end cap (nielsen device).
Which OD has a nielsen device piston (for 9mm) and which ID has nielsen device and end cap for reliable functioning, without rubbing and without blowing off gases ?
Thanks a lot.

Hi

I’m looking for a booster this size. One that will fit inside a form 1 ‘c cell’ sized tube. Did you make any more by chance?
