44 mag 300gr load?
44 mag 300gr load?
I've recently received my Ruger 77/44 from John Tibbits and have been reading through all 28 pages on this forum. I've found quite a bit of info and loads for 240 gr xtp's but not so much for 300 gr xtp's. Is anyone using the 300gr xtp's with success. I was thinking of working up a load with either Trail Boss or Unique as I have both of these powders already but would like some input from others on this forum.

Re: 44 mag 300gr load?
300 xtp, 300 sierra, 300 nosler all in silent destroyer with 8.9 grains unique runs right around 1060 and below the sonic crack threshold--I have e-mailed with denall and he uses cast in his personal 77/44 (since these come apart). have used rcbs 300 cast with & without gas checks at 7.8--7.9 grains unique also---lee 310 cast at 7.4 grains or more blows the mag out every shot(7.2 grains is recommended max load-for a handgun)---hornady also has a 265 rn sp jacketed that does well at 9.1 grains however--since Connecticut they have evaporated(#4305)--only see single boxes here or there
Re: 44 mag 300gr load?
Finally able to get out and test a few loads. Shooting thru a Ruger 77/44 with a Shillen 1/16 twist integrally suppressed barrel by John Tibbits Jr.
60 degrees and very humid
OAL 1.61
barrel cleaned after every 3 shot group
300 Hornady XTP
50 yards from bench rest with sand bags
3 shot groups
Unique 8.3gr 1.4" group 1010 fps avg.
Unique 8.5gr 1.5" group 1026fps avg.
Unique 8.8gr 4.2" group 1050fps avg. "surprising"
Winchester 296 14.6gr 0.5" group "best in the group, all three holes touching"
Winchester 296 14.9gr 2.1" group
IMR 4227 17.6gr 1.1" group-sonic crack
IMR 4227 18gr 1.3" group-sonic crack
chrony battery died after first 9 shots no result on velocity of W296 or IMR 4227. W296 loads were subsonic however IMR 4227 loads went supersonic . More testing will be done with IMR 4227 and W296 with chronograph.

Re: 44 mag 300gr load?
those 296 loads look interesting. will try them with some h110 and see what I get.
Re: 44 mag 300gr load?
I'd be interested to see what your chrono results are. I'm thinking you are going to be running on the slow side.cokel wrote: Winchester 296 14.6gr 0.5" group "best in the group, all three holes touching"

I load 16.5 gr. of W296/H110, and get 1016 fps. with a 7.5" pistol (not revolver) barrel.

Re: 44 mag 300gr load?
Thought I would share this with you all,
I had the chance to get out the Ruger (John's Ruger 77/44 Suppressed from Texas), and do some longer testing with it.
Temp was 74 degrees at 830 feet elevation, 76% humidity, Velocity at 950fps
Load: 18grains IMR 4227, Hornady 300g XTP, Remington Brass, Winchester Large Pistol Primer
Zero at 100yards,
Verified Data:
50 yards + 8.5 MOA
100 yards 0 MOA
147 yards -9 MOA (broke clay pidgeons, and milk jugs filled with water)
216 yards -23.5 MOA (12 x 12 inch steel)
300 Yards -42.5 MOA (12x12 inch steel)
400 Yards could not see the bullet impact anywhere at -64 MOA. I tried to spin the turrent up and down (+/- 10 MOA) and could not hit a man sized steel target. I think the bullet destabilizes after somewhere after 300 yards (just a guess).
This was from an older post of mine...The Load will give an occasional Sonic crack when cold out in non-Remington brass.
This gives me a pretty consistent 1.5in group at 100 yards...

Thanks for this! I've been googling for hours trying to find a load for these 300gr sierras.

I should have clarified that I was wanting to use Unique, but I appreciate that link.

Re: 44 mag 300gr load?
I use a 290gr cast in my 44mag, titegroup powder. Work great.
